Danza Antiqua

The overall objective is to give students a complete immersion into the arts, history, life and culture of the 19th century using social dance as a basis to enhance the social studies curriculum.

This project is to sponsor an Arts in Education program hosting Ms. Nancy J. Walker and Mr. Jef Savage, Rostered Artists for the state of PA for a total of 20 days (10 days for 7th grade and 10 days for 8th grade) during the 2023-24 school year at the James Buchanan Middle School. The Arts in Education programs are organized by the Cultural Alliance of York County. The core group will comprise Mr. Hess’s and Mr. Stanizewski’s 7th World Geography and Mrs. Chilcote and Mrs. Reath’s 8th grade American History classes. The overall objective is to give students a complete immersion into the arts, history, life and culture of the 19th century using social dance as a basis to enhance the social studies curriculum. By helping the students make more connections between their subjects, the more meaningful their studies will be to them, as well as opening new avenues for exploration and a greater appreciation of the past and the multi-cultural contributions to these decades. Ms. Walker & Mr. Savage will also be teaching the students other aspects of history including, but not limited to the following: analysis of primary documents; significance of photography during the Civil War; the life of the Civil War Soldier and Officers; the role of women and children during the war; Lincoln’s Inauguration; Fraktur and German Migration; the Sanitary Commission; Native American Contributions to the Civil War; and more. In 7th grade students will experience lessons, dances, and fabric arts from countries such as Israel, Russia, Germany, and more.
